THE BIRTH OF A MARKET TOWN

Altrincham began to take shape as a town in 1290,during the reign of Edward I. A Royal Charter was
sealed, allowing the lord of Altrincham, Hamo de Masci, to hold a market and fair. This was followed by Hamo’s
own charter, creating Altrincham a market borough. The market and fair were held in the Old Market Place,
where today, you can find replicas of the original market  cross, stocks and whipping post and historic buildings
that were once an important part of the community.Goose Green is a small square featuring quaint old cottages and a
sculpture entitled ‘The Geese’. This historic part of Altrincham is now home to some of the town’s most attractive specialist shops.
